Job Applications

Employers use an application form to find out about your background before they interview you. It’s important to fill out the application carefully otherwise it might cost you an opportunity for employment. Applications will usually ask for information on previous employment, education, skills and references. Read the following guidelines to guide you through the application process.

Tips

·              Always ask for two copies.

·              Be careful to follow instructions.

·              Complete one copy of the form in pencil; this becomes your “rough draft”

file copy.

·              Complete the second copy of the form using an extra-fine-point black pen.  This will represent your very best image on paper and it will demonstrate the quality of your work.

·              Answer all questions on the application form.  Enter a small dash (-) in the center of the line or (N/A) if the questions do not apply to you.

Example: Military Service    -    or N/A

·              State the specific job title for which you are applying.  Never apply for

“anything”.

·              Double-check the form for accuracy and quality. Check your spelling.

Personal References

A personal reference should be a person who knows you well and thinks highly of you.  When using references for a job application, be sure that you contact the prospective reference source for permission to use their name.  Never use a reference without permission. Employers will check your references and you definitely want them to remember who you are.
