Writing a Cover Letter

To make a good impression, send a cover letter along with your resume. A cover letter helps to introduce you to an employer. You might send the same resume to different companies. However, you should write a different cover letter for each job. A cover letter should be submitted along with the resume (on top of the resume). It is brief, neat and error-free. An Excellent cover letter:

Dear Mr. Jones:

I came across your advertisement for a Clerical Assistant in the Imperial
Valley Press, and I would like to be considered for the position.

I am currently working with Poway City Hall as a Clerical Assistant. I have learned many office procedures necessary for this position such as directing phone calls, filing documents, directing public, data entry and typing documents. I have earned a certificate for completing a youth employment-training program with IVROP Project ACE (Accessing Careers through Education). I have also taken various computer courses where I have learned to operate numerous computer programs related to office occupations. My work experience, along with my people skills, makes me a good candidate for this position.

I appreciate your consideration and I hope to hear from you soon to further discuss my qualifications. You may reach me at (760) 555-3456.

Sincerely,

Sally Brown
